Per Chris Matthews, President Obama is going to call for the end of DADT in his SOTU address tonight. This is big news.
Last year there was messaging that major legislation involving DADT and DOMA would occur at some time during the Obama Presidency. This rightly led to angst in the gay and progressive community. Why could the President not act on DADT immediately, with the stroke of his pen?
The President wanted congress to act on DADT. So what will his message be tonight? Is he going to ask congress to act on it as part of the Defense Appropriations Bill? Is he going to end the policy by Executive Order?
I'll be watching this one very closely. Lets hope the President calls this correctly and ends this atrocious policy for good. Its time for the President and the Administration to act on many of the ideals they campaigned on, and this would be a great place to start.
